The next generation of Nissan’s Altima, the fifth, has just been revealed at the New York Auto Show. After a long waiting time, filled with teasers and loads of spy shots, the actual thing is here. Read on to find out the important details concerning the car, as well as its price and when US citizens will get to buy it.
Powertrain-wise, the new QR25 2.5-liter four-cylinder features variable timing on both cams and a composite variable-volume intake manifold to broaden the torque curve. The engine is lighter and features a magnesium oil pan and a smart-charging alternator, and peak output increases from 170 hp and 175 lb-ft to 182/180. Combined with a next-gen CVT (wider ratio range, 40 percent less friction, improved control logic), EPA fuel economy improves from 23/32 mpg to 27/38 (the unchanged VQ 3.5-liter V-6's EPA scores jump from 20/27 to 22/30, thanks to the CVT). A hybrid model will follow at an unspecified date. The CVT is the only transmission available regardless of engine choice.
2013 Nissan Altima A hybrid option is expected to be added, but only from model year 2014 onwards; it will consisit of a supercharged 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine mated to a compact electric motor integrated with the CVT transmission.
The styling of the Altima is smoother, with a lower drag coefficient, an aggressive stance, a wider front and rear track, as well as deeper fenders. The rear of the car is decorated by LED lighting.
Safety features will include blindspot warning, lane departure warning, moving object detection, along with dual stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt sensors and an occupant classification sensor, front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags, and roof-mounted curtain supplemental side-impact air bags for front-and rear-seat occupant head protection.
The 2013 Altima gets the NissanConnectSM and Advanced Drive-Assist Display (ADAD) installed. Infotainment and connectivity are the stuff they deal with; Bluetooth, hands-free messaging, Pandora integration, or USB are some of the features available on the Altima.
Starting this summer, the 2013 Nissan Altima will in showrooms at the price of 21,500 dollars.
