John Patitucci: Line by Line (2006)

John Patitucci's Line by Line is mostly a quiet and thoughtful affair. The performances often feature close interplay between the bassist and guitarist Adam Rogers, with stimulating support from drummer Brian Blade and occasional guest appearances by the great tenor Chris Potter. The music is adventurous but often lyrical, with Patitucci being a key soloist but not completely dominating the performances, giving his sidemen plenty of space of their own.

Pat Metheny: Unity Band (2012)

Pat Metheny's Unity Band is a wave to his fine album 80/81, which featured the late Michael Brecker and Dewey Redman on saxes. Their roles are merged here on a batch of new Metheny pieces by the versatile Chris Potter, accompanied by regular drummer Antonio Sanchez and gifted bass newcomer Ben Williams. The themes are typical Metheny: sensuous Latin grooves, synth-guitar fusion, folksy ballads, a good deal of jazz swing – and the rhythm section is mindboggling, not to mention beautifully recorded. Roofdogs evokes the long-running Pat Metheny Group with its horn-like guitar synth, Come and See imaginatively mingles the multi-stringed Picasso guitar and Potter's bass clarinet. Meanwhile, jamming with Williams and Sanchez on Leaving Town, Metheny's blues/funk phrasing is as fresh as any of his recorded improvisations in recent times. The torchy Then and Now showcases Potter's resonant tenor tone and upper-register ease, and Breakdealer offers a short-burst theme for everybody to solo on. It's all about the playing skills of a dazzling band, which live shows will undoubtedly ram home even harder.

Mason Brothers: Two Sides, One Story (2011)

After spending 20 years performing under the leadership of others, British brothers Brad and Elliot Mason step out front, taking charge of an all-star band that redefines the trumpet-trombone front line of drummer Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers of the '50s and '60s. The round and mellow combination of Brad Mason's trumpet with Elliot Mason's trombone sounds almost like the early Crusaders.

With pianist David Kikoski, bassist Scott Colley, drummer Antonio Sanchez, and saxophonist Chris Potter joining the brothers, there is a lot of firepower to lives up to its billing.

The title of "Stage Pints" is an anagram of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Elliot Mason's resulting rearrangement beginning with the familiar tune played in reverse over the original bass line, reharmonized and performed alternately in 3/4 and 4/4 time. Both Masons give angular, if frenetic solos, Elliot's blowing out the top of the song. Potter exerts his muscular tone over the piece's well-worn and complex harmony of the piece, bringing the original's importance—and this re-imagining—into proper focus. When this piece hits 4/4, it takes off with a burn.
