Ivan Lins: Awa Yio (1993)

This album reflects the seven-year international experience of Ivan Lins, with the careful production by Stewart Levine and Larry Williams. The thoughtful balance between Brazilian elements turned more palatable to international audiences through pop touches made it a big hit, the patriotic "Meu Pais." All lyrics in this album are from Vitor Martins (with a bit of Aldir Blanc), his longtime musical partner, and his business partner since the previous year when the label that released this and other Lins' albums, Velas. Lins' lyrics are all the way Brazilian, using regional expressions and praising the country's beauties. Most songs are quite rhythmic, using Caribbean grooves ("Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai"), samba ("Leva E Traz," a tribute to the unforgettable Elis Regina, with the valuable Brazilian seven-string violao by the great late Rafael Rabello), ballads ("Que Quer de Mim," "Meu Pais"), and Afro-pop ("Clareou," with a bright trumpet solo by South African Hugh Masekela).

An original album recorded by Ivan Lins in 1986. Highlights are tracks: Beijo Infinito, Vitoriosa, Sede Dos Marujos, Atras Poeira, Luas De Pequim, etc.
Renowned as a carioca songwriter, vocalist, and pianist, Ivan Lins recorded several albums for EMI Brasil and Reprise, as well as writing Brazilian standards. Born in 1945, Lins came to fame in Brazil in 1970 when Elis Regina recorded his song "Magdalena" for a hit. His worldwide debut, A Noite, appeared in 1979. Lins' most famous composition, "Love Dance" ("Lembrança"), has been recorded by dozens of jazz artists, including Kenny Burrell, Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Nancy Wilson, Mark Murphy, George Benson, Diane Schuur, and James Blood Ulmer. Other noted songs by Lins ("The Island," "Comecar de Novo," "Dona Palmeira," "Nocturna") have been recorded by artists including Airto Moreira, Herbie Mann, and Terence Blanchard.

Ivan Lins: Perfil (2010)

Composer Ivan Lins is one of Brazil's most commercially successful artists, having been embraced by the North American soft-pop establishment in the '70s and '80s. Favoring complex vocal arrangements and glitzy, baroque pop settings, Ivan Lins composes lavish, jazz-tinged pop -- he aimed at becoming a Brazilian Stevie Wonder, though later wound up roughly in the same territory as Barry Manilow. I have to confess, most of what I've heard of his I haven't liked very much, particularly his later stuff, which is just too saccharine for me. But his early work, which helped set the pace for the lavish pop experimentation of the '70s MPB years, is definitely worth checking out.

Ivan Lins: Saudades de Casa (2007)

This is Ivan Lins at his best. Every track makes me ache, cry, and smile. What wonderful music and melodic vocals! (I don't understand a word of Portuguese and it really does not matter at all.) This is music that is accentuated by lyrics and you can really FEEL what is going on. I wholeheartedly recommend this CD. It is great the first time you hear it. It is 20x better the 10th time you hear it. I'm at the 50th-60th listening and it only gets better and better. I love it. -- Amazon.com
