Apple's new Siri, the voice-activated virtual assistant built into its new iPhone 4S, has already been hailed as a game changer. Actually, most synthetic computerized voices -- at least in the United States -- are female. "It's much easier to find a female voice that everyone likes than it is a male voice," he said. "Babies will attend to a female voice more than they will a male one."
"A male voice is seen as a better teacher of technology," he said, "and a female voice is better for everything else.

Apple is silent on the matter. "That voice is burned into our collective psyche," said Bajarin. "Hal is sinister."
"Siri, I love you," sings the musician Jonathan Mann in a howlingly funny video duet with his iPhone.
"You say that to all the virtual assistants," answers Siri.
The software, called Siri, allows users to give the phone verbal commands or ask it questions such as “What is the weather like in Oswego?” or “Call Mark.”

Siri, like a few software programs before it, features verbal command text messaging, allowing the user to speak the message, which is then converted to text on the screen — no typing required.
New York’s ban on texting while driving applies to “manual communication,” meaning it’s against the law to use your hands to operate your phone while driving. The original state law, in late 2001, applied to talking on the phone. The state first banned texting while driving in November 2009.
“If a device isn’t being held then there’s no problem.”

The new iPhone and its software, Siri, need to be powered up and activated manually, meaning you have to push a button to turn the phone on and then press and hold the iPhone’s home key to activate Siri. Many online iPhone 4S users said they wanted to read the text message before sending to make sure Siri heard them correctly.
