Chinese internet giant Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) Weibo microblogging platform recently launched a voluntary real name system that allows users to confirm their identity by providing personal details such as their national ID card number, legal name, and mobile phone number to obtain a unique ID number in order to protect against identity fraud.
Over 300,000 celebrity and institutional accounts on Sina Weibo have registered verified accounts that display the "V" badge, and over 1.2 mln ordinary users have registered to receive the star-shaped "Daren" verified account badge. Sina says that 50% of Weibo users have synced their account to a mobile phone.--Sina is an online media company in China, which makes money primarily from display advertising and mobile value added services.
Sina has launched a new chat/messaging service called Weiyou, or Weibo Messenger. [1] It has also launched an Android app for Weiyou and is working on an iPhone app. It is similar to other instant messaging clients like Tencent’s QQ but is targeted specifically at Sina Weibo users. It supports voice and text messaging as well as group messaging. Display advertising on Sina and Weibo accounts for nearly 60% of its Trefis price estimate.
A sweet-looking new app from a Chinese startup lets you ‘circle’ and categorize the people you follow on Sina’s (NASDAQ:SINA) Weibo, for easy grouping of your favourite ‘tweeters.’ The Interesting Circles app (so far for Android only, but with an iPhone version in the works) then shows you a bunch of people you follow – but not, it seems, everyone; the selection appeared random – and you then need to make new circles and add people to them. The Sina Weibo web app already has a groups feature.
