LG to unveil 84-inch 3DTV at CES

Apparently, a 55-inch OLED television isn’t wowing enough. So, in addition to the TV we reported on Tuesday, LG will also be unveiling at CES what it describes as the world’s largest 3-D “Ultra Definition” television — an 84-inch, 3840×2160 resolution 3-D display.

Popularly known as 4K — because of the some 4,000 pixels stretched horizontally across the screen — a display of this resolution contains 8 million pixels, which is four times the number of current HD displays. Currently, 4K has really only been effectively commercialized in high-end projectors from Sony and JVC, but Sharp and Toshiba have recently introduced 4K displays of 60-inch and 55-inch size, respectively. With all these home video and audio improvements, it’s no wonder audiences may be choosing to enjoy new Hollywood titles in the comfort of their own homes rather than at a cinema. So it’s totally win-win.

LG plans to unveil an 84-inch 3DTV at January's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which the company said will be the world's largest. LG said the TV will include 8 million pixels and boast a resolution of 3480-by-2160, four times the resolution found on full HDTV sets. LG said its 3D Depth Control technology will allow users to customize the 3D experience, promising sound that "rivals the output of all but the best home theater systems." The 3DTV will also include access to LG's Smart TV ecosystem with more than 1,200 apps and premium content. The included remote also has voice-activated and gesture controls.

"While light sources in backlight units, like LCD panels, must always be kept on, the OLED panel allows diodes to be turned on or off which enables lower power consumption than conventional LCD panels," the company said. It's a mammoth 84-inch TV, with a resolution of 3,840x2,160 pixels. That's classed as 'ultra definition' -- with four times the resolution of HD. Four times. Insane. It looks suspiciously like the 84-inch 4K TV LG showed at the last CES in January, but with enhanced Smart TV capabilities bringing apps and the power of the internet to your lounge. This set will sit nicely alongside the largest OLED TV LG will be showing off at CES, as well the company's redesigned 3D glasses.
