Gorgeous fusion of Brazilian Bossa, Folk and Soul from LA’s Gaby Hernandez. Now, we’re most used to seeing Gaby share billing with her Build An Ark co-founder Carlos Nino, or in collaboration with a constellation of her LA friends and contemporaries (Take, Teebs, Ammoncontact, Dimlite, the list is loong!), but on Sweet Starry Night it’s Gaby Hernandez at the top, and much the better for it. The instrumental backings from the Life Force Trio, aka longterm musical partners Carlos Nino & Dexter Story of Build An Ark, lend a lush yet simplistic freshness and narrative breeziness to her diverse and bilingual songcraft, taking in lo-fi synth music reminding of Julia Holter to begin with ‘No One But You’ or paying homage to her inspirations, Karen Carpenter on ‘Maze’ or ‘There You Stood’, and the erotic earth mother vibes of ‘Nature Making Love’. And some of the most beautiful moments occur when she switches to her Latin roots, as with the pastoral sway of ‘Luna Luna’ and the cradled dreamstate of ‘Amor Mi Sol’. She’s clearly one artiste who can live up to her list of inspirations, from Minnie Ripperton to Sade and Gal Costa.
