The Dutch/German trio Torque utilizes a style of improvisation that emphasizes the trio as a coherent unit. While rooted in contemporary jazz, the influences of pop music and classical music can’t be overheard. Pianist Koen Schalkwijk contributes the majority of the compositions. Mathias Polligkeit on the bass and Antoine Duijkers on the drums are supplying a solid rhythmic foundation on which the expressive compositions are evolved. The musicians are moving effortlessly through the pieces and follow the flow they are creating collaboratively. In 2011, their first album Forward has been released on Neuklang records and has garnered positive reviews in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. The music has been featured on Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandradio Kultur, HR2 Kultur, NDR Info, Radio Bremen, SR 2, Radio 6, 3voor12 (VPRO) and 3sat among others. Also in 2011, Torque began collaborating with dancers Aida Guirro Salinas and Jefta Tanate. Their first performance, which featured one set of collectively improvised dance and music, has met enthusiastic reactions from the audience.
