The album ‘Smells Like Tape Spirit’ by Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet was first made available via the Internet on February 18, 2011. The ‘virtual’ album created great interest and therefore it was only a matter of time for fans to request a version could be cherished, touched and most importantly placed in/on a player. On April 11th 2011 discerning music fans across Poland wishes came true. Wojtek teamed up with the largest independent record label in Poland, Mystic Production to issue a CD version of ‘Smells Like Tape Spirit’, as well as a vinyl version! In the short time between the Internet release via www.mazolewski.com and the CD/Vinyl release, Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet went out on the road. The band played to sell out audiences across Poland. Upon the bands return home they were pleased to discover they had become the first jazz act ever to appear on PR3 (National Radio) Listeners Chart. ‘Newcomer’ remained on the chart for several weeks. The band subsequently performed especially for PR3. Excerpts of this very special performance can be heard here - http://www.polskieradio.com/player Now championed by The Wire via their Office Ambient Chart you can stream ‘A Star From Prague (On The Fruit of the Unearthly Bodies)’ by clicking this link – http://www.thewire.co.uk/articles/6399/ Creating ‘Smells Like Team Spirit’ was a long and intense process lasting two years. Selecting musicians, compositions and colleagues was slow and methodical in order to create a special and lasting musical work. Upon hearing the ten compositions featured on ‘Smells Like Tape Spirit’ you appreciate why fine wines take time to mature. Particularly of note is the process of development and production decided upon by the leader of WMQ - Wojciech Mazolewski. All material was recorded and produced in the same way as sessions recorded by Jon Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, and The Beatles during the '50s and '60s. ‘Smells Like Tape Spirit’ was therefore created in a studio specifically built for this purpose, using only fully analog equipment housed at Radio Gdańsk. The band recorded all together in one room, in real time, without overdubs so as to give the recording a natural feel and sound. To remain faithful to the idea of recording the album in the style of the great masters, the mixing process of mixing was also analog. The album was mixed straight to analog tape without using any effects during the missing process. The result is a warm, soft sound that can be likened to touching velvet. ‘Smells Like Tape Spirit’ was produced by Wojtek Mazolewski and engineered by Piotr Taraszkiewicz. Quotes from reviews of ‘Smells Like Tape Spirit’ are as follows: - • "The album evokes memories of Miles' second quintet and yet at the same time echoes the most contemporary concepts in jazz. The compositions and musicianship delight delivering a warm, deep tone. "Lukasz Iwasinski (Machina) * "The effects of analog recording methods are fascinating. “ Jędrzej Słodkowski (Gazeta Wyborcza) * "Mazolewski Quintet are one of the most exciting bands on the jazz scene today " (newspaper.pl) * "Smells Like Tape Spirit" is a great album (Zycie Warszawy) * "The album never fails to impress no matter how many times you listen" (Onet.pl) • "Mazolewski spent over two years building an analog studio, choosing the musicians and the compositions.
