When Gary Primich died of an accidental drug overdose in Austin in September 2007, the reaction from friends and blues fans was sadness, not the sadness that often follows news of a death, but a bone-deep gloom that lingers.
Chicago-born, Indiana-raised and Austin-based, Primich was the real blues deal, an accomplished harmonica player, singer, songwriter and bandleader. His knowledge of, and love for, the genre was unparalleled. His harmonica and vocal talents were top-tier. Primich could blow the reeds out of a blues harp, but he could also caress and finesse the instrument with the kind of chops and scope few harmonica honkers take the time to cultivate. Primich was a bandleader who also was a team player.
The 23-track, two-disc compilation CD "Just a Little Bit More" is a loving testimony to, and a fitting showcase for, the full Primich range. The disc features Primich as a leader and as a sideman with Kent "Omar" Dykes and the Howlers.
When Primich's "Money Habit" and "House Rockin' Party" bump up against his version of Kurt Weill's "September Song" and Dykes' "Hoo Doo Ball" followed by Primich's take on the Duke Ellington band's "Caravan," it's the Primich way. He embraced the blues, defied the boundaries and smashed the stereotypes.
That he left too soon is a damned shame. That he left behind a cool, hot catalog shines a little light through the gloom.
