Twitter buys Android security Systems Whisper

Twitter has bought Android security firm Whisper Systems, which could lead to safer Twitter apps on mobile devices.--Whisper Systems makes five products for Android, including Textsecure, an encrypted text message service, Redphone, an encrypted calling service, Flashback, an encrypted backup product, Whispermonitor, a network security product, and Whispercore, a data and device security product.

Whisper Systems' software works on multiple levels, from enhancing app security to delivering a hardened version of Android and adding kernel modifications to address security issues. "Now that we're joining Twitter, we're looking forward to bringing our technology and our expertise into Twitter's products and services," the company said in a statement. Whisper Systems said that it did not like the poor state of mobile security and wanted to reinvent the security features that never really worked on PCs.

The transition will lead to some disruption for existing Whisper Systems users, with a number of services and products being taken temporarily offline. The company might add the software to its apps or could alter it to become part of the core Twitter service. The deal, which was announced late yesterday by Whisper Systems itself, was also confirmed by Twitter to the Wall Street Journal.

Whisper Systems has been a fairly low-profile company that develops a number of mobile security products that protect voice calls, messaging and the sending of users’ private data to apps and the mobile web. On a more general level, Twitter and Whisper Systems also appear to share a common goal of focusing more on user privacy. Whisper Systems was founded in 2010 by Moxie Marlinspike and Stuart Anderson, two IT security specialists who will now join Twitter. Whisper Systems made software for Android devices that encyrpted phone calls, text messages backup files and more.

The service was shut down without warning yesterday, however, as part of the Twitter takeover of the Whisper Systems. Whisper Sytems was founded by Moxie Marlinspike and Stuart Anderson, well-known experts on security and encryption. Twitter said its new staff would join a "fast-growing engineering team".--"They will be bringing their technology and security expertise to Twitter's products and services," a spokesman said. Twitter has previously been criticised for its approach to security.
