The highly impressive turbocharged three-cylinder unit — one of Autocar’s favourite engines and already fitted to the Focus — will save owners at least 10g/km in CO2 emissions compared with the four-pot petrols that power today’s Fiesta.
That will bring savings in VED tax and fuel economy, but the engine will also add a lively driving style and pleasantly thrumming three-pot engine note to the Fiesta.
The 1.0 Ecoboost is just one example of a significantly revamped Fiesta engine range based on the powerplants recently announced for the Fiesta-based B-Max mini-MPV.
Also on the cards for the revised Fiesta are a 73bhp 1.5 TDCi and a 93bhp 1.6 TDCi, tipped to replace the 1.4 TDCi. These engines will bring more power and slightly better CO2 emissions to diesel Fiestas.
There will also be styling changes, which incorporate the new grille and headlamps seen on the Fiesta ST.
A mule of the four-door Fiesta has been scooped testing in Germany, and it gives a few clues about the new front-end styling of the facelifted Fiesta, which will make its debut at the Paris show in September.
Despite a wave of smaller saloons from rivals Seat and Skoda, Ford won’t sell the four-door Fiesta in the UK.
“It’s more for emerging markets and the hot and cold-weather countries than the UK,” said one insider.
