Lew Soloff: Hanalei Bay (1983)

A brilliant high-note trumpeter long in great demand for big bands and session work, Lew Soloff is also a distinctive soloist and an expert with the plunger mute. After studying at Juilliard, he freelanced in New York with Maynard Ferguson, Joe Henderson, and Clark Terry, among others, and then was a part of Blood, Sweat & Tears during 1968-1973. Soloff was closely associated with Gil Evans from 1973 on, and also played with George Gruntz's Concert Jazz Band, the Manhattan Jazz Quintet, and Carla Bley; he was also teamed with the colorful trombonist Ray Anderson on several often-humorous recordings.

Danny Gottlieb: Aquamarine (1987)

For a while there in the late 1980s there was a short-lived fusion comeback. The Chick Corea Electrik Band was having some success. The new Mahavishnu band was attracting attention. Musicians such as saxophonist Bill Evans, drummer Dennis Chambers, keyboardist Clifford Carter, bassist Mark Egan and others began to develop a following. Guitarist Allan Holdsworth was making a mark. Soon, however, the record companies clamped down on any creativity coming from this branch of jazz in favor of the now burgeoning "smooth jazz" movement. (Pardon me; I need a moment to gag.) Recording contracts and promotional funds evaporated faster than a bubble on a gas burner.
Danny Gottlieb was among those shortchanged by this corporate attitude. Gottlieb had been part of the very popular Pat Metheny Group and later the reformed Mahavishnu. Along with his musical partner, the wonderful bassist Mark Egan, he had formed the very impressive band Elements. Unfortunately, Aquamarine became one of his few bites of the apple. It is nonetheless a delicious bite.
An infectious semi-Caribbean percussive riff opens the title cut, which is a pleasing ballad powered by the sailing guitar synthesizer of John Abercrombie, Doug Hall's keyboards and Gottlieb's backbeat. Its beautiful melody even makes "Aquamarine" a potential smooth jazz vehicle. (Pardon me; I need another moment to gag.) Luckily, thanks to the players' advanced improvising, that terrible fate does not befall this memorable melody, and in time the ingratiating opening riff returns to keep everything afloat. This isn't deep-sea diving. But a little scuba in the coral reef can make for an exciting outing. The rest of the album ain't chum either.

Bill Evans: Soul Insider (2000)

Tenor and soprano saxophonist Bill Evans has always been one of jazz's most forward-thinking and prolific musicians; yet, he's also one of its most undervalued. Pursuing contrasting styles and sounds, accompanied by his scorching, soulful technique, Evans has courted jazz-rap (Escape), all- acoustic bop (Starfish and the Moon), and neo-smooth jazz (Touch). With skills honed in the furnaces of Miles Davis's groups and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Evans has addressed commercial concerns but has also made time to blow mean music and push the boundaries. Soul Insider is a bump- righteous, soul-jazz affair as funky as a Blues Brothers record, but as smooth as silk and cigar smoke. Surrounding himself with a crack band, including guitarist John Scofield, organist Ricky Peterson, percussionist Don Alias, and heroic funk-drummer supreme, Steve Jordan, Soul Insider simmers slowly to the boiling point. It's a rare record where everyone actually grooves like mad in the studio live, and tracks such as "Van's Joint" and "Cool Eddie" pump like Booker T & the MGs injected with NYC grease and gravy. Les McCann adds vocals on "Lose My Number" and "You Sure Look Good to Me," bringing a good-natured glee to the rumpus-room funk. "Cheeks" recalls early David Sanborn or classic King Curtis or Aretha, while "Sneaky" is drenched in a nocturnal urban edge, as is the sweltering "Older Days." Evans blows hot and boisterous throughout, raising high this squirming soul soufflé. --Ken Micallef

Bill Evans: Dragonfly (2012)

"Dragonfly continues the evolution of Soulgrass and is the third release of the Soulgrass band. It is a unique blend of earthy vocal tunes as sung by Josh Dion, our drummer, as well as soulful and hard-hitting grooves played by special guests and legends, Warren Haynes and Steve Lukather. John Medeski makes an appearance on organ as well. As stated by Evans, “I find this to be a very addictive CD that best captures our current band's live vibe. Off the charts!”
Its the mix of the banjo (Ryan Cavanaugh) and Guitar (Mitch Stein) that become infectious. Andy Hess, Clifford Carter, Roger Squitero, as well as all-star drummer Keith Carlock, Danny Louis (B3) and Tim Lefbevre. This music is constantly evolving."
