Hiromi Trio Project: Move (2012)

It is often said that one "sees" a musical performance, but in jazz concerts there is usually little to watch. Not so with Japanese keyboardist and composer Hiromi. An explosive presence on stage, she resembles a jazz fusion marionette with big hair. Rhythmic accents and displacements are accompanied by almost balletic physical gestures, made possible by a prodigious technical control.
The music is structured in short sections during which Hiromi, contrabassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Philips (of Toto fame) play across the underlying beat to upset listeners' expectations. All is resolved when, at the end of the section, the three musicians triumphantly arrive together at the first beat of the bar. It produces a cycle of tension and release. Hiromi never dwells on any one stylistic approach for long, rather like a polymath keen to shift from one subject to another in a perpetual display of bravura. Her cross-rhythmic phrasing is exceptional, articulation flawless and percussiveness impressive.
The melodic lines are balanced and her musical vocabulary effortlessly spans styles of jazz. There are also classical allusions. Beethoven's Pathetique sonata was developed in jazz blues style. Aesthetically, Hiromi is yet to fully mature. Her music hovers uneasily between showmanship and joyousness, at the expense of the latter. But the excitement is irresistible. At the end of the performance, Hiromi appeared tired. Dancing while playing will do that to you.

Phil Soussan: No Protection (2011)

Five years after his first solo album ‘Vibrate’, the multi-talented multi-instrumentalist is back with its follow-up. This time around though Phil Soussan has elected to do without the guest musicians and has written, performed and produced the whole shooting match himself, and in doing so has created an impressive and beautifully cohesive collection of hard rock songs.
A low-key start to the album opener and title track gives way to the sort of mid-paced rocker Bon Jovi used to write when they were any good, and serves as a fair marker of what to expect over the next fifty-seven minutes or so. In fact, the feel-good vibe of the best of JBJ (or maybe Robin George’s ‘Dangerous Music’ debut all those years ago) isn’t a bad point of reference. ‘No Protection’ isn’t an aggression-burning leap-around-the-room kind of album, nor is it particularly challenging on the senses; instead it’s a sublimely uplifting body of work, best heard – or infused – on a lazy summer’s day when, with not a care in the world, you can let the songs transport you to their creator’s seemingly green and pleasant land (cold beer optional).
‘No Protection’ is not as polished as ‘Vibrate’ and sounds all the better for it, the odd rough edge and unexpected twist (check out the change of perspective midway through, uh, ‘Change Of Perspective’ or the Eastern rhythms that pop up unexpectedly in ‘Big Love’) showing that the songs were written first and foremost to satisfy the artist himself rather than any record company expectation. Personal highlights include the pop-tinged ‘Keeping Alive A Memory’, the more lively ‘Just Business’ with its cracking little solo and the sassy and enigmatic ‘Free My Soul’, a rough diamond with a soft heart.
The playing is flawless, the singing soulful – is there nothing this man can’t do! – and away from the music Soussan has put a lot of effort into the CD booklet and packaging too.

Steve Weingart & Renee Jones: Dialogue (2011)

In the making of my third album, 'Dialogue', I enjoyed many first time experiences. One was developing some of the music in co-writing with my wife, Renee Jones. It is her first time recording bass and vocals on an entire project with me. Renee's participation in this music brought about another level in our friendship/marriage. We decided that since everything went so well, we would make our partnership the core of this work, and make plans to tour together in support of this album. Also very noteworthy was my experience with drummer, Simon Phillips who, during the initial stages became co-producer. Because we shared a lot of common ground in our musical tastes, it was very easy to work together. I think that companionship is quite evident upon listening to the very high production value Simon brought to this album, -not only in his musical performance, but also in engineering and mixing the album. My good friends, Steve Lukather, Victor Wooten, and Lenny Castro graciously brought their voices to this album as well. It was quite an experience working with these guys as well as my friends and great musicians, Mike Miller-guitar, and Katisse Buckingham-saxes & flute, who appear throughout this album. I'm very proud of this body of music. I am also honored that we all shared such good and positive experiences in the making of this CD. I learned that you cannot underestimate the power of friendship, and I know my fond and happy memories of these sessions will live forever. ~ Steve Weingart
